Do you have a dull or underused hallway at home? It’s time to transform it! Often overlooked, the hallway is a transitional space with enormous decorative potential. With these 10 brilliant ideas to decorate your hallway, you can turn it into a stylish, functional, and personality-filled corner.
Whether your hallway is long, narrow, short, or bathed in natural light, these tips adapt to all types of homes. Keep reading and discover how to elevate your style with practical and decorative solutions!
1. Dress It from Top to Bottom
When you think about decorating the hallway, don’t limit yourself to the walls: the ceiling and floor also count. You can bet on decorative moldings on the ceiling or choose a wallpaper that covers the walls and contrasts with the floor and doors (if any).
Do not forget to take into account other elements that can add a special touch to the hallway, such as door handles or place a special lamp or sconce as in the Fleming Apartment project, in which we lined the walls with Phillip Jeffries paper and added a sophisticated touch to the doors with Philip Watts handles.
2. Combine Wallpaper and Mirrors
Wallpaper is an excellent tool for giving life to corridors, especially if they have little light. You can combine it with one or several decorative mirrors to multiply the light and generate a feeling of spaciousness.
This double is ideal for narrow corridors. Opt for geometric or botanical prints that accompany the overall style of your home as we did in the Albo House project with a custom-made mirror and wallpaper by Andrew Martin.
3. Go for Bold Doors
Several doors are concentrated in many corridors. A way to add character, if you are daring, is to paint them in bold colors, such as olive green, deep blue or terracotta.
If you want a more neutral space, you can also apply moldings or choose original handles as those of the project Penthouse Rechson. If you prefer a more uniform aesthetic, paint doors and walls in the same tone to create an enveloping effect.
4. Install Cabinets
If space allows, integrating custom cabinets can be a perfect solution to add storage without sacrificing design.
You can camouflage them with smooth fronts in the same color of the wall, or turn them into highlighted pieces with natural wood finishes or lacquered. Ideal for storing coats, shoes, bedding or cleaning products.
5. Dare with Unique Wall Treatments
Aisles also accept material sets. A wooden plinth, a ceramic piece with drawing or mirror pieces can add texture and personality. In addition, you can combine them and generate a feeling of spaciousness, as well as turn a corner step in the center of attention.
In the Gaudir Apartment project we covered the entire wall of the hallway with a matt lacquered arlequin panelling and bronze mirror.
6. Custom Furniture: Always a Winner
When space is limited, custom-made furniture is the best solution. A shoemaker’s bench, a narrow console or a built-in coat rack can perform practical functions without impeding the passage.
The custom-made design allows you to take advantage of every centimeter and adapt to the distribution of space, as in the case of the Mila Apartment where we made a custom furniture console for the hall on a wall coated with bronze mirror.
7. Turn It into a Storage Area
Even in small aisles, you can create intelligent storage solutions. Floating shelves, decorative baskets, hidden coat racks or cabinets can help you organize and maintain visual order.
If you choose to place cabinets or storage modules, you can incorporate a decorative niche or open shelves to create a more aesthetically attractive corner. You can also create a small reading corner if the hallway has a light window or gap.
8. Light the Way with Wall Sconces
Lighting is key to enhancing the style of a hallway. Instead of a single central lamp, opt for wall lamps distributed along the path or choose to include a side or a backlit dimming. In addition to being more decorative, they help create a warmer and more enveloping light.
Another interesting option is to include some motion sensors to turn on the lights as you pass, like in the Dexeus Apartment project.
9. Decorate with Art
Paintings, prints, photographs or even small sculptures turn the hallway into a personal gallery. Play with symmetrical compositions or collage-like murals to add dynamism. If you prefer, hang a single striking piece that catches all eyes.
10. Integrate Built-In Shelves
Built-in shelves are a versatile solution for decorating without taking up space, and there are many possibilities. You can use them to place books, small plants, candles or decorative pieces.
If they are painted in the same color as the wall or in neutral tones that match, the effect will be subtle and elegant. Ideal for creating functional and visual corners.
Decorate your hallway in style
The hallway is usually one of the big forgotten ones, but you can turn it into one of the most stylish spaces in your home if you know how. With a little creativity and planning, you can transform this step space into a functional, bright and full of personality corner.
