Our design table Carlo, the making off


A round table, essential, symmetrical, easily buildable and multiply, without more ostentation than the design itself, conceived to be a useful tool for the human being.

The inspiration

Carlo its born from the design legacy of the 60s, one of the golden eras of industrial design. The industrialized use of wood and different types of plastic allowed to multiply the possibilities of design, generating results impossible until that date.

The hanging and light structures of the Carlo table seem to make it able to detach from the ground and start flying. Small curvilinear executive details evoke the world of aviation and the automotive industry.

First steps

After having the concept and design clear and strengthened, we move on to the digital creation phase in real terms and measurements. After a process of creation of the piece in numerical control to detail came the moment to create a first prototype.

Thanks to a five-axis molding machine we were able to create this table in two large, differentiated pieces; the envelope and the legs. Two independent pieces that depend on each other for an optimal and aesthetic result.

Once these two large pieces were created, the envelope was mounted, supported by its peculiar legs. In a first test we verified how the weight of the envelope involved a general instability and an unwanted warp. It is these details and the improvements during the process that make a design richer and more sophisticated.

The solution

Once we analyzed the reasons for the weaving and the lack of stability we had to look for a concrete solution. We had two very clear options that we had to choose.

On the one hand, one solution was to reduce the thickness of the envelope on the table, which also meant losing strength. A second solution was to increase the thickness of the legs and maintain the same thickness of the envelope.

Valuing both options, it was finally decided to increase the thickness of the legs, a solution that respected the original idea of ​​the design more and completely solved the problems of stability.
