How to design a dream suite? 8 keys to achieve it.
Bedroom en suite: a formula that works
Creating a bedroom with an integrated bathroom and dressing area is a great option if space permits. It is a way to create a unique room for rest, relaxation and well-being.
If we want to achieve a bedroom environment with bathroom and/or dressing room, the most important thing is the space available to see if you can create three distinct areas (rest area, bathroom, and dressing or closet area).
The importance of finding the optimal layout
Before starting, we must also be clear about the priorities (both aesthetic and functional) of the people who will use this space. It is also important to choose the solution that works best for us or that we like, since we can opt for total or partial integration.
Previously, it is also advisable to make sure of some technical factors such as the location of the downspouts, the installation options of the faucets (recessed, free-standing, etc …), the possibility of installing a shower tray, or something as important as humidity and air conditioning system.
1. The size of the space
To achieve a functional and aesthetically pleasing layout, we need a minimum surface area that allows us to integrate all the elements without making the space look small or uncomfortable.
The larger the space, the better the circulation, the greater the privacy and the more possibilities to add luxury details that define a true suite, such as a freestanding bathtub, a dressing table or a reading corner.
The ideal is to have a minimum of 15m2 to ensure a spacious and comfortable environment, and if there are more, the possibilities of playing multiply.
Keys to good suite design
Depending on the space we have and the configuration we have thought for the suite, we will fit better a closed dressing room with doors or open.
If we have our own space for the dressing room, such as a separate bedroom, it will be more practical and visual an open dressing room without doors.
If the dressing room is integrated in the same bedroom, it will be more visually coherent to opt for closets with doors, ensuring visual order.
Visual cohesion between the different environments is fundamental. Keeping the same language and betting on a chromatic range is essential to ensure that everything is balanced and breathes the same atmosphere.
Choosing the right materials and colors helps to make the whole space look harmonious. To achieve this, it is key to maintain the same range of colors that unifies the different rooms.
It is also important to use the right materials depending on the space: for example, in the bathroom you need surfaces that resist humidity.
If space is limited, the best option is to choose custom-made or built-in furniture so that the room does not look too cluttered.
There are different ways to solve the transitions between different environments within the same space. In the case of a suite, it is important when it comes to the separation between the bedroom and the bathroom.
The bathroom can be fully integrated, separating only those areas that require more privacy, such as the toilet area and the shower area.
This separation can be done through glass doors like those of Lualdi, hidden doors, or playing with partitions and small walls.
Taking advantage of furniture elements is also a good option. You can play with a bed headboard or a free-standing furniture that delimits the spaces, and thus dispense with partitions.
As we said at the beginning, the first thing to do is to analyze the architecture itself and see what the space allows us to get the most out of it and optimize every centimeter.
Good design planning should prioritize a fluid distribution, in which the three different areas (bedroom, dressing room and bathroom) are well connected to each other, creating a comfortable and functional experience.
In addition, it is essential to preserve privacy between the most intimate areas without creating a visual or spatial break. The key is to find a balance between functional separation and aesthetic continuity.
Something basic is to separate the most private areas from the rest, but to maintain that aesthetic continuity and give sense to the distribution, there are different ways to generate this limitation.
One of the most effective solutions and that we use in many projects are glass partitions, either as a wall or creating a cabin effect. It is a great option to separate without losing light or space.
The variety of glass options allows to maintain that privacy, but to play with the aesthetics through opaque, translucent, textured glass,…
It is very important to work the lighting in the projects and especially when looking to create different environments in the same space.
In a suite, it is essential that each space has its own lighting, since we will need a type of light for each area.
For the bedroom, it is necessary to bet on a warm and adjustable lighting with different points. In the dressing room area, the lighting must be neutral and punctual in the closet area to be able to see the clothes well, so it is highly recommended to place LED strips inside the modules.
For the bathroom, the lighting should have at least two modes: one more ambient and dim for moments of relaxation and a more powerful one for tasks that require optimal lighting such as make-up or washing.
The en-suite bedroom can have doors or panels that make separation while maintaining shared environments.
If a door is incorporated, the ideal is that it becomes a decorative piece more and that has an important weight, becoming a reference piece and that gives character to the space.
It can be from a different paneling with wooden slats, mirrors, vinyls, … Even be a totally different solution as a curtain, a resource that, for example, we used to separate the bathroom area and the dressing room in the suite of the Riam Apartment project.
