Dexeus Apartment
A large family turns to Molins Design to transform an old apartment that has been anchored in the past and turn it into a modern and functional home with a very distinctive style and personality.
A spacious apartment, generous in square meters, which has privileged views of the entire city and facing the sea.
The property was acquired in its original state of construction, with a marked distribution and aesthetics typical of the seventies that made you feel transported to the past just crossing the threshold of the door.
Dexeus wood architecture project & renovation for apartment in Barcelona
A project in which, after the complete renovation, has managed to move from an outdated apartment with seventies aesthetics to a classic decorating style, with a Japanese touch and adapted to the needs of a large family.
The great challenges in this project have been, on the one hand, to take advantage of the total square meters to the maximum and frame in addition to the master suite, three bedrooms as equal as possible with their own bathrooms for the children.
On the other hand, it was necessary to integrate an almost complete wood house project in a large part of the house so that it will be visually balanced
This wood architecture project draws on great sources of inspiration from the world of design and architecture.
The design of this project is clearly inspired by the austere Japanese minimalism, with a sober masculine character and small modern touches, through the use of chromaticism typical of the Bauhaus, Gari Riedvelt or Piet Mondrain.
The entire interior design with wood is an interesting game of crosses and winks, which are intertwined in a rigorous meeting of lines and planes and that are visually confused between what should be a pavement, a ceiling, or a cladding.
A whole set of formal solutions, that applied to the different pieces of furniture, appear as if they were children’s games. When applied in a repetitive manner, they configure a series of functional pieces, generating shelves, consoles and other elements halfway between the functional and the decorative.

A living room with a lot of personality
The living-dining room is the main area of the Dexeus wood architecture project and decoration. It is the main protagonist of the day area both for its visual amplitude, enhanced by the magnificent views of the city, and for its aesthetics.
Living room is the space in which more design work and technical solutions have been applied. All the furniture designed and custom-made by the studio team, as well as the meticulous design of the lighting and the careful selection of decorative objects, make it a cult space.
In this room, is where the inspiration in Japanese minimalism is more present. An austere masculine personality and modern touches of colors make up a unique space with a huge personality.
"Balloon frame", a unique design
But if it is worth highlighting some specific furniture elements of this project, it is the two sets of living room shelves. Magnificent sculptural shelves, custom-made and designed by Molins Design, with a strong inspiration in the American structural system Balloon Frame.
A living room shelves floating that has been designed with a structure of solid oak slats, a series of shelves in unevenness as display modules, and with a striking combination of backs and doors in melamine lacquered in red, blue and green inspired by the Bauhaus and the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.
A clear nod to the different artistic references that inspire the design of this project and that translate into some of the most unique pieces created by our studio.
Construction detail of the shelf
A bold living room with an interior design with wood and lots of color
The living room is intentionally focused on the exterior and the wonderful views of the city. A space that is presided over by a large L-shaped sofa that embraces both side walls.
A sofa that, like the whole set, is another very particular piece for its homogeneous mix of textures: a synthetic leather with natural grain in chocolate color for the base and a soft and robust smooth fabric in a powerful blue tone.
The lounge area is completed by a set of armchairs and footrests in dark wood and black leather seats from Ethnicraft, complemented by a set of side table and pouf with Molins hallmark. All the set is perfectly framed in a large rug in the same style as the dining room one.
An interior decoration with wood for living room
This wood house project has a large repertoire of unique pieces of furniture, custom-designed by the studio. Another of the outstanding pieces designed especially for this house in woods design is the bedside cabinet that completes the sofa set.
An element that also plays with the combination of oak veneer with a warm ivory-toned marble. A special piece that serves as a storage area and side table.
Decorative objects by Molins Selection
A large part of the selection of complements and decorative objects of the living room shelves can be found in Selection by Molins, the online store of Molins Design.
An exclusive online store where buy all kinds of decorative elements such as trays, vases, candlesticks, or even textiles for the home. A special choice of objects selected by the studio’s interior designers to elevate the style of your home.
House in woods design for the dining room
In the day area, and as it could not be otherwise for a large family, there is a large dining area for eight guests.
This area is presided by a large custom-made solid wood table that combines wood with two elegant tops in the same ivory-toned marble of the table-top furniture.
A cozy dining area that is completed by comfortable upholstered chairs in gray tones and black lacquered legs along with a large gray carpet and two stylish suspended lamps by Artemide that finish dressing the space.
An efficient apartment
In terms of air conditioning, the house is equipped with climate control by segregated zones, using the Airzone system. This system allows for completely independent control of each of the rooms, using digital thermostats.
Regardless of the season, the system adapts its mode and offers the appropriate thermal comfort, as well as efficient energy consumption.
In summer, two air-conditioning machines, with their motorized discharge grilles, solve the problem of heat and humidity typical of a city during the hottest months.
In winter, on the other hand, the situation is solved thanks to the installation of an underfloor heating system. A system that allows to heat a house with hot water at low temperature with a very efficient energy performance coefficient.
Glass enclosure for office and kitchen
The different spaces of the day area are divided from each other, with different types of glass enclosures, depending on the rigidity of the enclosure, which is required at a functional level. Thus, kitchen and office are completely closed and independent of the living-dining room.
In an imperceptible alignment of the enclosures, between the large sliding doors leading to the kitchen and the pivot door leading to the office, there is harmony in terms of the enclosure technique used.
Smoked glass doors with aluminium profiles of Lualdi are the subtle protagonists of a second distributor that leads to the living-dining room.
Glass enclosure for office: visible and concealed at the same time
Opposite the kitchen is a large office with up to three work areas, designed to offer every possible convenience. In the case of the distinction between the living room and the office, there is an interesting play of reflections, thanks to the reflective glass in a smoked tone, which is perceived as an ingenious visual play of continuity that deceives the observer.
Thanks to this glass enclosure for the office, the space has its own privacy while enjoying being able to observe the entire daytime area, as well as the views of the city.
In the design of this office, special attention has also been paid to sound insulation, ensuring a quiet environment conducive to creating an ideal home office.
Glass kitchen partition
The kitchen appears as if it were a continuity, following the same visual of the hallway. Through the large sliding door in smoked glass of Lualdi, access to the minimalist kitchen and where brown and beige tones predominate.
A clear example of how to design a modern and functional kitchen, and in this case, also designed for a comfortable and functional daily activity for a large family.
The use of glass kitchen partition allows you to choose to have a closed and / or open kitchen as the time and occasion requires.
A neutral and minimalist kitchen
The use of natural wood, the stony perception provided by porcelain tiles and the touch of aluminium, integrate this space in the play of volumes and encounters between layouts on different axes.
Thanks to this practice, custom-made furniture and cabinetry elements are combined in a design with architectural intentions and classic decoration style.
The storage modules and worktops are located on both sides of the kitchen, which combines furniture in oak veneer with cabinets and appliances panelled in beige lacquered phoenix.
A kitchen layout with central island, in which space is optimized to the maximum, ensuring basic pillars such as comfort and functionality.
Set of solutions for passageways
The distributor corridor has different lighting solutions and typologies. A complex lighting design work that features LED backlighting in the ceilings, multiple technical lighting focal points, and a system of hidden spotlights in the lower area with presence sensors that allow the automatic switching on of lights when passing through.
Join us in this House Tour of this interior design project and integral reform of a 180m2 apartment located in the Bonanova area of Barcelona.
In the Dexeus wood architecture project we have transformed an apartment anchored in the seventies into a modern and practical home with a lot of personality for a large family.
Sketch of the courtesy bathroom
A courtesy bathroom camouflaged in a house in woods design
From the entrance hall, turning to the left, you enter in the most intimate area of the apartment. On both sides of the long corridor, four bedrooms are distributed: a double suite with bathroom, two single bedrooms with bathroom and a single bedroom.
The courtesy bathroom, which also serves as the main bathroom for one of the children’s bedrooms, is practically linked to the hall and seems to emerge from the continuity of one of the hall closets.
This bathroom, of simple aesthetics is presented with brown tones to match the oak wood that predominates throughout the project. A bathroom with sink and toilet in chocolate finish and a fun coating and pavement in a terrazzo in beige tones that surrounds the entire space in a warm atmosphere.
A neutral suite, but with character
In the master bedroom, the large headboard in a striking printed Dedar fabric steals the limelight to the room and breaks with the white tone of the closets.
The bed area is completed by Defense bedside tables, one of the studio’s hallmark pieces, in this case made of oak wood, on which hang the unique Oyster pendant lamps by Forestier.
Finally, the sleeping area is complemented by a bench at the foot of the bed made of oak slats and a comfortable seat designed by Molins.
A double bathroom with a rustic touch
The master suite has a private bathroom that have a similar configuration to the rest of the bedrooms, but always thinking of two.
That is why, making a good use of the available space, there is a large shower area covered with an elegant Zellige porcelain tile in blue tones by Marazzi.
Also, the wall and floor covering -including the shower – is made with a porcelain tile that emulates the granularity of the earth, providing texture and the warmth of natural colors.
The furniture made of solid pine wood consists of a simple, straight-lined bathroom cabinet with two pieces of washbasin on a chocolate finish that match with the toilet. Also, decorative wood panels for interior walls hide a cupboard that forms a small corner as a decorative niche.
Equal children’s bedrooms for all
The three children’s bedrooms have the same approach: a generous desk, spacious closets, shelving modules and trundle beds.
A set of custom-made furniture designed and conceived following the same minimalist line of the rest of the house and creating cozy and functional spaces for the little ones.
For the bathrooms of the children’s bedrooms, we have also used an equal distribution for all, positioning a bathroom furniture with straight lines in oak wood.
As well as models of rectangular washbasins, wall-hung toilets and shower areas with screens and ceramic tile cladding with touches of color and a rustic Zellige aesthetic to add a touch of freshness.
An interior design project with wood
The Dexeus Apartment project is a wish list completed. A proposal of ten both for its location and its meticulous design work, as well as the wide range of features it has.
A total transformation of an old apartment from the 1970s into a 21st century home, but with many references to classic architecture and design.
