Girona House
In recent years, the name of Girona has begun to be heard loudly, catapulting itself as a reference city at a European and global level. Known for its architectural and cultural heritage, its award-winning gastronomy, and also for being the capital of high-end cycle tourism in Europe.
Personalities such as Lance Armstrong or the Roca brothers have made the city known worldwide in the field of sports and cuisine, but its attractive urban planning has also captivated the film and audiovisual industry to film large productions.
It is not surprising that our clients, who have lived in different parts of the globe, decided to locate their habitual residence in a residential area. A house with views of the countryside on the outskirts of the city where you can enjoy peace and quality of life in a privileged environment and in full contact with nature.
An interior design project for a single-family house in Girona in which we started practically from scratch, giving shape to an initial structure that has ended up becoming a modern, open plan home surrounded by nature.
A modern design house in Girona with a contemporary style with Mediterranean features, in which the combination of natural materials and the connection with the outside are the protagonists.
Interior design for a single-family house in Girona
Clients come to Molins Design to finish building and design the entire interior design of a 250m² detached house in Girona that is mid-construction on the outskirts of the city of Girona. A young couple with a newborn child looking to establish their home in the tranquility of the city’s outskirts.
The project started from the already built concrete structure, which was given a new finish and the entire design and floor plan layout was rethought.
In collaboration with a local construction company, it was shaped until we obtained a designer single-family house in Girona, fully adapted to the needs and desires of the owners.
The modern Mediterranean-style house presents a symmetrical and balanced design with a smooth façade and anthracite gray aluminum carpentry.
A Mediterranean-style house facade with an architecture of clean and defined lines in which the arrangement of windows and doors follows a uniform pattern with the aim of maximizing the functionality and efficiency of the space.
Following the aesthetics of the Mediterranean style house facade, for the entrance we designed a natural oak with horizontal slats’ door to establish an orderly plane, in which space was given to a piece of transparent glass that allowed us to provide a certain transparency for the visitor’s view.
With special dedication, we worked on the design of the main entrance space. To break with the homogeneity of the porcelain pavement, a tree pit was located to house a tree that would provide shade and welcome this single-family house with a modern design in Girona.

Open space design and distribution
The general distribution of the house is described on a main floor where the entire day area is located, which in an open plan connects the hall with the living-dining area and the open kitchen. The main floor also has an office, a guest bathroom and the large garden at the back that connects on both sides with the entrance porch.
On the upper floor there are three bedrooms and two bathrooms. Finally, the house has a basement where the parking and different service areas are located.
A rustic house decoration with Mediterranean touches
On an aesthetic level, the interior of the house breathes the same air of a modern Mediterranean style house with straight lines as the exterior, but touches of rustic style come into play, where the interior design with natural oak wood and neutral tones are the protagonists.
A fundamental requirement was communication with the outside, since the house has a generous garden with impressive views of the countryside. For this reason, the design script and floor plan distribution of the day area was key and had to solve a whole set of needs in the same area.
A completely open interior design for a single-family house in Girona
The main floor that houses the entire day area is presented as a single, completely open space without transitions. A single space in which only a small office and the guest bathroom are conventionally connected.
As it did not have a hall, the design and floor layout suggested a visual division between the entrance and the living area. Reason why it was necessary to generate a permeable element, which would allow us to develop a natural dialogue between the hall and the living room.
At this point, it was decided to add the sinuosity of the curved lines and introduce wood into the interior design with a console-type piece of furniture for the hall that acts as a dividing screen like a lattice.
A multifunctional piece that becomes one of the iconic elements of this designer single-family house project in Girona.
This custom-made piece of furniture simultaneously serves as a receptacle for the sofa, also in a curved shape. A way to integrate all the hall furniture and connect organically and naturally with the living room.
Curved lines and soft textures for a rustic and modern living room
In this single-family house design in Girona, the elevation of the main library was one of the key and most complex pieces to fit into the project.
Large and with the need to include a wood-burning fireplace in the script, it was decided to look for an idea of marked horizontality, where the limestone in a honed finish and the natural oak wood with a strong marked grain, turned out to be a combination accurate.
A checkerboard-style library, with sets of open and closed spaces with decorative niches, and a composition in which audiovisual technology is completely integrated into the front of the furniture. In this way, the bookcase fits elegantly with the entrance furniture.
The use of white marble breaks with the rustic touch of the interior wood paneling and provides a modern and sophisticated touch to the set that is fully complemented by the wood-burning fireplace and the vertical sheet steel woodshed.
An open day area with views of the countryside
The day area is completely open and open. Without barriers or separations, but with three clearly delimited areas in which the furniture elements themselves create the limits between the different sequences.
Thus, in the intermediate area, behind the curvature of the custom-made sofa, there is a small dining area that leads us to a third area: the open kitchen with a central island.
The entire design of this single-family house in Girona is based on making the most of the generous entry of light it has and connecting the interior with the magnificent exterior of this house with views of the countryside.
Modern interior design with wood
In the center of the space, a small dining area was located with an oval table also made of natural oak wood with the Carlo leg model designed by Molins Design and a set of Quinti chairs with wood-colored legs to match the table and seats upholstered in gray to match the kitchen furniture.
The dining table designed and made to measure in oak wood has the uniqueness of being extendable, allowing it to occupy the space that the family requires for its daily life, but whose capacity can increase to accommodate ten guests.
A modern and functional open kitchen
The kitchen has an L shape with a combination of anthracite gray melamine and natural oak wood modules custom-made by Molins Design.
On one side are the appliances that are fully integrated. In the elevation of the wall, two refrigerators are hidden behind the melamine panels, providing a feeling of order and luminosity. On the same wall, a wine refrigerator is integrated, as well as the oven and microwave in a column, improving the distribution and optimizing the kitchen space.
The central island has a lacquered melamine structure in the same anthracite tone as the modules and has a whole set of easily accessible drawers.
A very efficient solution was the Inalco porcelain tile used on both the kitchen work surface and the island. A porcelain tile worked differently for each area.
In the front area of the kitchen, 12-millimeter porcelain tile is used naturally. On the other hand, on the island it is mitered, in four centimeters, to also give it that overhanging sensation in the area of the stools.
Natural materials and rustic touches
The combination of natural materials in the kitchen is one of the main keys to obtaining a practical and functional kitchen with a modern and rustic aesthetic at the same time.
Natural materials such as natural oak wood have been used for the kitchen design, which is the same interior wood paneling used in the library and dining room. On the front of the kitchen we have used a slightly more unique coating that is the tesserae, these glazed porcelain pieces that are also very typical from here in the Girona and Empordà area and provide a unique and distinctive touch.
On a decorative level, there are two details worth highlighting: the backlit decorative niche that breaks with the horizontality of the front module and the suspended Karman lamps over the central island that seek to be a reference for antique brass pots.
A modern office to work at home
Currently, we do not consider a home without a space where we can work. In this modern design house in Girona, a much-needed office area for the owners could not be missing.
The office is designed to be a comfortable and practical space. A place connected to the day area, but at the same time with the option of making it private and being able to close it to guarantee greater tranquility.
Both the large library and the desk are custom-made furniture made by combining a melamine in stone tones with an oak melamine. A resistant material, easy to clean, practical and very versatile.
At the same time, it was also chosen to opt for continuity in terms of the flooring material, as well as good lighting to be able to work in a space merely intended for work.
A rustic style bathroom with Mediterranean inspiration
The courtesy bathroom is inspired by nature and gives off very Mediterranean vibes.
The natural materials and neutral tones provide that feeling of calm and warmth that make it a small, serene and peaceful space.
This bathroom, which takes a walk-in shower, maintains the hegemony of the rest of the floor in terms of materials, combining the interior design with wood and stone coatings.
Both the bathroom furniture and the backlit shelf are made of the same oak wood as the furniture in the other rooms. The entire bathroom has a Sand Mosaico Mix porcelain tile by Marazzi and taps in a brushed bronze finish by Hansgrohe.
Another element that adds that Mediterranean air is the stone countertop sink that completes the set.
Welcome to the House Tour of the interior design project Girona House. We present this interior design project for a detached house in Girona with incredible views of the countryside.
An interior design and decoration project in which we have shaped an already built concrete structure into a modern and functional home with strong Mediterranean inspiration for a young family.
A suite with privileged views
The master suite presents a particular resolution, since the bedroom and bathroom are integrated into the same space, there is no division between the two, but a vertical wall has been chosen to delimit the two spaces.
Facing south, the master bedroom has a generous amount of space, as well as privileged views of the countryside. Reason why the bathroom is open and integrated into the bedroom complex through a unique piece in which the sink is presented as a central island from which a darkened steel structure is articulated, which houses a two-sided mirror.
The bedroom has a practical and functional design with a large closet that occupies the entire wall, matching a central island that enhances the idea of a dressing area.
The bed facing the large window is fitted into a large headboard that goes from side to side of the wall, custom-made from the same oak wood used on the main floor, with the perimeter framed with slats.
The set is completed by two Defense coffee tables designed by Molins in the same wood to match the headboard.
A bathroom integrated into the suite with views of the countryside
The glass dividing doors that separate the shower and toilet area were materialized in smoky-colored glazing and bronze-colored stainless steel handles, which reveal through the reflection the beautiful graphic of the marble veining inside.
At a formal level, bronze finishes have been chosen for both the taps and the handles. The lacquered furniture with large capacity as an island, serves the sink area and is completed with a piece made of mirror-tanned stainless steel and in which a space is left at the bottom to enhance the feeling of visual spaciousness.
Bath design sketch
Small oasis of relaxation with views of tranquility
The distribution of the entire suite was designed oriented towards the spectacular views of the countryside that the home enjoys, which is why both the bedroom and the bathroom are designed to enjoy the outside landscape.
One of the most special corners is the bathtub that is right under the window for moments of relaxation with views of the tranquility that surrounds this house with views of the countryside. A built-in bookshelf with oak shelves completes this charming corner and provides a decorative touch
A fun and simple children's room
For the children’s room in this designer single-family house in Girona, the choice was a simple and practical design, but at the same time it elegantly resolved the basic needs of a children’s room.
The custom-made furniture solution was summarized in a large melamine wardrobe area, with the special touch of the handles that have a minimalist but functional design and a small decorative niche in oak, as well as a trundle bed for potential guests.
At a chromatic level, very fresh and simple colors were selected. With a neutral base and a touch of gray and natural wood, the touch of color is provided by elements of the decoration in pastel tones.
Functional children's desk area
Like any children’s room, it must have a desk area where they can do homework, draw, and give free rein to creativity. Taking advantage of the magnificent views to the outside and the generous entry of light, the work area was located under the window.
An elegant Venetian curtain in sand tones and a small shelf built into the wall finish dressing this minimalist children’s bedroom.
A Mediterranean touch
As we do in most of our interior design projects, bathrooms are one of the spaces that allow us to give more room to the imagination and where we are committed to creating unique and very personal spaces.
In the bathroom shared by the son and the guest bedroom, we sought to capture that Mediterranean essence and that distinctive touch through the use of small format tiles, a trendy option that is very effective for achieving a modern bathroom with personality.
To provide that more unique touch, small octagonal-shaped pieces in a soft navy blue from Cifre Cerámicas were selected.
A custom-made piece of furniture with a large storage capacity with a Corian surface, a countertop sink also in Corian and Ritmonio bronze finish taps complete this unique bathroom.
A dreamed garden house with country views
In terms of exterior design and landscaping, this has been a very interesting project, since an effort has always been made to eliminate the transitions between the interior space and the exterior space. For this reason, this platform was executed made with the same porcelain tile as the interior of the home, thus eliminating a visual barrier through the use of materials.
Just connected to the kitchen, we located an outdoor dining area that, through the same platform, connects with the living area or chill out area located on the other side.
A beautiful dining area with Kettal furniture that plays on the same tones and textures that can be seen inside this modern design house in Girona.
Another important exercise carried out in the outdoor space has been the creation and enclosure of the perimeter of the garden. A large perimeter fence made of metal slats delimits and closes the garden, remaining visually integrated with the environment.
Remember that we are at a higher level than the adjacent land, and we have had to play with this element of protection. We have also worked with different vegetal layers that have allowed us to create this gradient that also connects us with the vegetal element of the landscape.
And here we have made an interesting game of full and empty, and here we have defined some small planters, some mix borders with different local species that undoubtedly give a special touch and give a vegetal play on these platforms that in the end are elements of a certain hardness.
