Decorate the walls of your child’s bedroom with skirting board and you will live in peace.

It is clear that the main purpose of skirting in children’s rooms is to protect the wall. The aim is to keep it safe from scuffs, scratches and stains. Children make their room a very special space and it is advisable to equip it so that they are comfortable. Of course, they do not pay attention to possible incidents on the decoration. They come to their room, leave their backpacks in any corner, put their feet under the table while reading or turn the walls into the goal of their races with friends.
Faced with this “earthquake of creatures”, it is important to plan a decoration that can withstand the epicentre and the possible aftershocks. Therefore, the skirting board in children’s rooms must have certain conditions that we will see below.
However, the image of the room must also be taken into account. You can combine the tough side of the room with an attractive, practical and functional decoration.
At Molins Design we have developed many projects where we have approached children’s and young people’s rooms with special dedication. Our experience tells us that installing skirting boards on the walls is always an interesting option. With this article we want to help you find the solution that best suits your space.
What does a skirting board add to a children's room?
We have already pointed out that the main purpose of skirting boards in children’s rooms is to protect the walls. In these spaces there are always impacts, knocks and scratches that can tarnish the wall. If a skirting board is installed, it will be easier to remove the remains or traces.
On the other hand, the decorative value of skirtings is very high. They contribute to making the space more dynamic and can stimulate the imagination of children even more. It is just a matter of playing with colours, shapes and layout.
And we must not forget the insulating effect of skirtings. They provide effective protection against cold and heat, and this factor is essential when the wall they cover corresponds to the façade of the building.
Types of skirting boards for children's walls
Decoration trends innovate every season offering different possibilities when it comes to placing skirting in children’s rooms. The options will depend on the size of the room, the type of furniture and the activity of the children. There are different types of skirting boards to choose from.
Skirting. This is the most basic skirting board and is usually installed throughout the house. Its function is to hide the space that may be left between the floor and the wall. Temperature changes can contribute to the expansion of the surface and it is necessary to give it air so that it does not crack. Whether ceramic, parquet or wood flooring, the skirting board is usually 8 – 10 cm high and 0.5 – 1 cm thick. It is a simple way to protect the wall, for example, from vacuuming.
Wooden mouldings. In this case, the mouldings cover a larger space. It can go from the floor to half a wall with a height of up to one metre. Panelling is a very common option. It is possible to create them with wooden strips or to place panels that already incorporate them. It is always advisable to manufacture wooden skirtings with a hard and resistant variety.
MDF boards. In many cases the skirting in children’s rooms is made of MDF boards. For their manufacture, pine or spruce wood fibres are pressed and mixed with glues and resins.
The result is a hard, resistant and highly decorative material. It will withstand impacts of different intensities without any problems, will help to insulate the room and offers many decorative possibilities.
Polyurethane panels. This option is very interesting because polyurethane is a highly resistant plastic material. Moreover, working on these sheets is simple because they are cut, glued and painted. They can be placed on the wall using some kind of mounting adhesive or by fitting them with screws in countersunk holes. The variety of colours is extensive and they offer a very modern and attractive finish.
Natural fibres. Another very valid possibility is to opt for panels made of organic materials. We are referring to pieces of bamboo, wicker, sackcloth or raffia. Without a doubt, natural fibres have a high aesthetic value and offer protection and natural decoration at the same time. When combined with light-coloured furniture, very interesting finishes are obtained, which combine very well with the childish look of the room.

Combining skirting in children's rooms
Once it has been decided what type of skirting board to install, it is important to match it well and integrate it into the rest of the décor.
A common option is to combine the skirting board with wallpaper. Professional decorators prefer to install pieces around 100 cm from the floor. Mouldings can be included to create shapes. Afterwards, it is possible to decide on a wallpaper model that matches the children’s furniture. A good idea is to match the colour of the skirting board to an element of the wallpaper pattern.
Another possibility is to place raised skirting board only on one of the walls of the children’s room. For example, in the area where the desk is located. The child’s movements when sitting in the chair can lead to staining the wall with his feet. In this case, you can opt for a moulding painted with a washable paint.
It is also a good idea to use high-quality laminate panels. These are thinner laminates that are easy to clean with a damp cloth.
When deciding on the colour of the skirting board, there are several options. At Molins Design we always advise you to choose light colours. The reason is that they increase the luminosity of the area. The simplest option is to combine the colour of the skirting board in children’s rooms with that of the wall. However, there are other possibilities.
It is also very decorative to use the same colour for the skirting board as for the doors, frames or even the bedding. In this way, a very uniform colour range is achieved that enhances the aesthetic value of the room.
Molins Design’s last piece of advice on the installation of skirting boards in children’s rooms refers to the ease of cleaning. It is essential to opt for materials, supports or paints that are washable. It is obvious that children can end up staining the pieces and that is why it is essential to be able to remove this dirt easily.
Ideally, a damp cloth and some neutral soap should be enough to remove all traces. It is not advisable to use aggressive products in a children’s room.
